What is the history of lotteries? one may ask. The Lottery is a form of gambling and is well known all over the world. If you don’t know, gambling is when you are wagering money or some form of an item that holds material value. There is an uncertain outcome with the intent to win more money or accumulate a more valuable item then what you gambled.

Lotteries come in various forms. You can play the lottery in the form of a scratch off ticket, a raffle ticket, or if aged up to eighteen or older you may play the lottery. Some lotteries may only be played by an individual who is twenty one and older. Typically, you would find that men play the lottery more then women do.

A gambling game that is a lottery-like or bingo-like game called Keno, was the very first known sign of a lottery that is traced back to the Han Dynasty, and dates back to 205 and 187 B.C.

History of Lotteries: During the time of the Roman Empire is when the first European lottery occurred. It was used mainly as a form of entertainment and amusement at dinner parties. Guests would receive a ticket where they had a chance to win items such as fancy dinnerware. Back then, every ticket holder was sure to be a winner!

The history of lotteries extends to Florence, Italy. In 1530 was the first European lottery that had money as one of the possible awards. The shift of the lottery to solely money prizes on odds was first established by the Dutch.

As you can see the lottery has changed over the years for the better. It started out as a form of amusement and grew into the lottery we have today where you can potentially win a lot of cash. Today you will find that prizes now come in a large lump sum cash payment, taxes may apply. Most likely you will see that a prize will need to be split between more than one individual.

Presently, lottery tickets are usually scanned using a device called an optical reader. The optical reader translates an imagine into digital information that the computer is capable of understanding and displaying to create big numbers.

The lottery, of course, has been a great success and will always need changes and have the need to evolve.
